Visualizing Heavenly Father and His Creation of Man

One day some time ago, in my mind’s eye, I was pondering a visual of what might be the physical appearance of the Creator of the Universe.  Following are some thought-provoking perspectives to consider about God and His image.

First, have you ever thought about the fact that God must be right-handed?  Countless times in His Word His right hand is referred to but never His left hand.  Of course, He could be either or ambidextrous if that was His desire.  Being left-handed myself, I think of these things.

Other thoughts then ran through my head . . .  But what about this?  God is referred to as having wings.

“Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of Your wings.”  Psalm 17:8

“. . . And in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge . . .”  Psalm 57:1b

“Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.”  Psalm 63:7

What do you think about that?  Yes, more likely than not it symbolizes His protection of His children.  Selah.

Do you ever spend much time imagining what God’s physical features might look like?  We have seen Him depicted as elderly with long white hair and His face bearded with a rather stern look.  He is always robed in a long white gown and radiates a certain brilliance about Him.  But is that truly an accurate description?  Many artists’ renderings and media’s images have similar representations.

In His Word, we are told we were made in His image.  Many years ago a Christian friend of mine told me her Pentecostal father believed that God had the appearance of ‘light’:

“O Lord my God, You are very great:  You are clothed with honor and majesty, who cover Yourself with light as with a garment . . .”  Psalm 104:1-2a

Her father described God as ‘light’ in human form.  But even more fascinating is the imagery in which man is described in the book of Genesis before the Fall of Mankind.  He, too, was described as ‘light’ by my friend’s father and, of course, was in the image of God as the word describes man’s appearance.

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness . . .”  Genesis 1:26a

According to her father, after the Fall though, man was clothed with (skin); in other words, he was clothed with flesh because of his sin.

“Also for Adam and his wife, the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.”  Genesis 3:21

To stretch one’s imagination a bit further, consider this:  Man would no longer be able to shine like a brilliant light as he had before the Fall.  Selah.

To take this a step further — speculate with me for a moment:  When Christ came into the world to take away our sins, we were again given the opportunity to let ‘our light’ shine for Him before men in this dark and sinful world.  As a Christ-follower, we would again become ‘light’ symbolically to a lost and dying world.

“Let your ‘light so shine before men.”  Matthew 5:16

Remember this sweet little chorus sung in Sunday School as a child?  It depicts well our challenge and purpose as children of God:

“This little light of mine; I’m going to let it shine, let it shine, all the time.”

Could it be that there is more to this speculation by my friend’s father than meets the eye?  No matter what,

“Glorious are the wonders of our Lord.  Magnificent are His mighty works upon this Earth.”
